Monotype welcomes Hoefler&Co to our family.

A message from Monotype CEO, Ninan Chacko.

Today we are announcing some very exciting news: Monotype has acquired Hoefler&Co, a world-renowned type foundry based in New York City. If you are reading this, you are likely familiar with Hoefler&Co, one of the premier names in our industry. Today, it becomes part of the Monotype family.

Hoefler&Co’s full library of more than 100 font families, 1,100 typefaces, and close to 2,300 styles will join the Monotype Library, including iconic names such as Gotham, Knockout, and Mercury. Global brands such as Tiffany & Co., Coca-Cola, Twitter, and both the Obama and Biden U.S. presidential campaigns, have chosen Hoefler&Co typefaces to represent their identities. This acquisition will allow us to provide deeper value and a wider breadth of fonts to the many global brands and creative professionals we serve.

Beyond that, it marks an important step in our journey to champion the role that type plays in global brand-building. Hoefler&Co’s typefaces are part of permanent collections at the Smithsonian Institute and Museum of Modern Art in New York. The company’s founder was the subject of an Emmy-nominated episode of the Netflix original documentary series Abstract: The Art of Design. As part of the acquisition, Monotype will now own and run typography.com, delivering customers more inventory, type education, and design expertise.

Jonathan Hoefler, who founded the company in 1989, and CEO Carleen Borsella will be departing to pursue other creative endeavors. But the rest of the Hoefler&Co team will join Monotype, providing deeper expertise and value to our existing and future brand partners.

Today marks an important step in our journey toward elevating the value of typography and demonstrating the impact it has in not just reflecting commerce and culture, but in driving it.

We’re thrilled to bring the Hoefler&Co team on board and look forward to what we will accomplish together. In the meantime, please join me in giving them a warm welcome to Monotype.
