WOBURN, Mass., August 21, 2024 — Monotype Imaging Inc., a global leader in type and technology, congratulates the 2024 winners of the Type Directors Club Adé Hogue and Beatrice Warde Scholarships, Patrick Guanaz and Gabriela Parra Sánchez.
Sponsored by Monotype, these two scholarships help to foster the future of the typographic industry by supporting the next generation of designers. The Type Directors Club, the world’s leading typography organization, celebrated all of their scholarship winners as well as winners of their 2024 Ascenders competition at an awards ceremony in New York on August 14.
“Congratulations to this year’s winners at this exciting moment in their typographic journeys. We’re delighted to be able to partner with the Type Directors Club to support typography’s next generation of designers, creators, and leaders,” said Sara Soskolne, Creative Type Director at Monotype.
The 2024 winner of the Adé Hogue Scholarship is Patrick Guanaz, a student at Senac São Paulo, Brazil. Honorable mentions were given to Jaamal Benjamin, Yale University; Nikki Caballero, Texas A&M; Shakthi Mari Narayanasamy and Ven Kataraman (team), Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).
This scholarship was created in memory of Broderick “Adé” Hogue, a Chicago-based art director and letterer passionate about fostering diversity in design. The $5,000 scholarship award is granted to an outstanding BIPOC student in recognition of their exceptional talent and promise as a creator of letterforms (in typeface, lettering, calligraphy, or typographic design).
The winner of this year’s Beatrice Warde Scholarship was Gabriela Parra Sánchez, a student at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Germany. This $5,000 scholarship is named after the TDC’s first female member, Beatrice Warde, who was a journalist, typographic scholar and communicator, and education advocate. The award celebrates one female-identifying college student who shows great skill and sophistication in typography. The winner also receives a one-year TDC membership and The World’s Best Typography®, Typography 45.
